Are you new to practicing witchcraft? Wondering about a witch’s toolkit and what you need to be a “witch”? I remember when I first heard the call, I thought I needed all the things! I went onto Google and asked what I needed to start and found lists upon lists of things I need to buy before I could even begin. After years of studying and practicing on my own, I can tell you that you need very little to practice witchcraft, I could argue that you need nothing at all! The tools of the trade merely aid you in your journey through helping you guide your intention.

That being said, I do have a few favorite tools that I believe have helped me, I’ll list them for you and let you know how I use them in my practice. This is a post about building your witch’s toolkit, right? Like I said you absolutely do not need to purchase any of the things I am going to list, these are just tools that I use in my craft that help me with channeling energy and manifesting my desires.

As you spend time studying every aspect of the craft, you will learn which tools aid you in your practice. Over time you will develop an understanding of what works for you and what doesn’t. Whether you’re a seasoned witch or not, building your witch’s toolkit tailored to your unique practice is important. So, let’s go! Here are the essential items I have included in my arsenal. Each with its own mystical charm and purpose.

Athame

A ceremonial dagger that embodies the element of air. The athame is often used to direct energy during rituals and spell work. Its double-edged blade symbolizes duality and the ability to cut through obstacles both mundane and spiritual.

I use my athame to direct my energy during rituals. I find it helps. Maybe, it makes me feel more “witchy” but I also find it helps me concentrate on my intention. For these reasons, I suggest you find yourself an athame that you connect to. Maybe, your dad or grandfather had one that you feel connected to, or you could go to a thrift store and find one there. Just remember to cleanse it really well before use.

Wand

Serves as a focal point for directing magical energy. A wand draws upon the element of fire to ignite intentions and spark transformation. You can craft your wand with various materials such as wood, crystal, or metal. A wand channels the Witch’s will into the universe, facilitating manifestation and ritual work.

I love my wand! Making my own instead of buying one was so much fun. I found a nice branch from a dogberry tree on one of my hikes. I took the bark off, gave it a little sanding and added some jute and feathers and an amethyst point crystal for the tip of the wand. It’s so pretty. You should make your own as well, it really helps you feel more connected. I use my wand during rituals to help direct my energy.

Cauldron

Symbolizes the womb of creation and the element of water, the cauldron is a sacred vessel. You can use it for brewing potions, incense, and conducting rituals. It holds the potential for transformation and rebirth. This makes the cauldron an indispensable tool for witches seeking to harness the powers of the unseen realms.

I absolutely love my cauldron, it’s my baby. My husband bought mine at a spiritual shop in my city. I use mine in spell work and ritual work. This is my favorite in my witch’s toolkit. I highly recommend getting your own, nothing makes you feel more like a witch!

Tarot and oracle decks are super popular in witchcraft for getting insight and guidance.

Tarot Cards

Tarot cards are a staple of divination and spiritual guidance. They can offer insights into the past, present, and future, serving as mirrors of the soul and conduits for intuition. You can use tarot cards for personal reflection and to help in spellcasting. If used for divination, they can help unlock the mysteries of the subconscious. Maybe even guide you towards personal growth and development.

It was my first tarot card reading when I was around 11 or 12 that sparked my interest in witchcraft. I asked my mother for a set for Christmas that year. After that I was hooked. Now I use them daily in my practice. I also have a set of oracle cards which are similar to tarot. Make sure you find a deck that resonates with you.

Crystals

We love crystals for their metaphysical properties and their ability to amplify energy. This makes them an essential component of any witch’s toolkit. When crystals are arranged in patterns, they are known as crystal grids. You can make your own grid or purchase a mat or download a printable online. These grids create energetic networks that enhance manifestation, healing, and spiritual alignment.

Crystals may be my weakness. I have so many. They truly help me so much. You will always find a crystal in my pocket plus I wear bracelets and necklaces every day as well. I recommend choosing your crystals with your intuition (which one calls to you)! And of course, always shop for your crystals ethically.

A magical grimoire is like a witch's personal playbook.

Book of Shadows

The Book of Shadows is a collection of knowledge, spells, and personal reflections. It can serve as a witch’s guidebook while on their journey of self-discovery and magical exploration. Inside you can place spells, rituals, and so much more. Basically, it’s a place to put everything you have learned so you always have a record for yourself.

My book of shadows is precious to me and very personal. Inside I have placed everything that I have learned throughout the years. I love crafting so I have added a little be of me to every page. You should keep one for yourself as well. You could make your own physically or digitally. These days having it on your phone may be the best option!

Incense and Herbs

Incense and herbs play a vital role in cleansing and purifying spaces, and tools. Both are also used during rituals and spell crafting. From sage and cedar to lavender and rosemary, each carries its own unique vibrations and properties. They can both be used to enhance spiritual practices and as an offering to gods and goddesses that you work with.

Both are equally used inside my practice. I love to use incense to cleanse my altar and tools, regularly. Herbs are a main ingredient in my spell jars and I often use them for anointing candles for spell work. As with crystals, please make sure you source your incense and herbs ethically if you choose to work with them in your craft.

Pendulum

A pendulum serves as a tool for divination. Suspended from a chain or cord, the pendulum responds to the subtle movements of energy. This provides clarity, guidance, and insights into whatever question you have asked it.

My pendulum is made from amethyst, and I love it! It is my go-to tool for “yes” and “no” questions. If you are a decisive person, I suggest you grab one for yourself. Check out your local witchy store.

Anointing Oils

Anointing oils when infused with botanical essences and charged with intention will serve as potent tools for ritual purification, consecration, and invocation. They can also be used to anoint candles, altar tools, or the body. These aromatic elixirs create sacred spaces and amplify the potency of spells and incantations.

When I work with candles, I use anointing oils. This is probably my favorite time to use them. I do, however, like to use them in spell jars and when I am making ritual bath salts. Anointing oils are easy to add to your practice. Find a carrier oil that you love and add herbs and essential oils that resonate with your intention!

Moon Phase Calendar

In witchcraft, the phases of the moon hold profound significance. The phases also influence the ebb and flow of energy and the timing of magical workings. A moon phase calendar allows witches to attune to the lunar cycles. This helps to harness the potent energy of each powerful moon. The energy of the new moon can help for new beginnings. The waxing moon’s energy can help with personal growth. The full moon’ s energy can be use for manifestation, and the waning moon for release and banishment.

Working with the moon will help you feel closer to the cycles of nature. It will also aid you in your spell work. A calendar with the moon phases on it or an app that you can keep on your phone would be helpful. I work with the moon, and I know if you do too you will see a difference in how you feel about your practice.
